Gardeners Leyton Health And Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out how Gardeners Leyton manages the safety and wellbeing of employees, subcontractors, clients, visitors and members of the public while carrying out gardening and grounds maintenance work. Our aim is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property by identifying risks and managing them in a practical and responsible way.
Our Health And Safety Objectives
Gardeners Leyton is committed to providing a safe working environment for all gardening activities, including lawn care, hedge trimming, planting, soft landscaping, waste removal and the use of machinery and powered tools. We will take all reasonably practicable steps to:
Identify and control hazards associated with gardening and maintenance work. Provide and maintain safe equipment, tools and vehicles. Ensure staff receive appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision. Reduce risks to the lowest level reasonably achievable. Promote a positive safety culture where concerns are reported and addressed promptly.
Roles And Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Leyton is responsible for implementing this policy, providing adequate resources for health and safety, and ensuring that risk assessments, procedures and training are kept up to date. Supervisors and team leaders must monitor day to day work on site, check that agreed safety procedures are followed and stop work if conditions become unsafe.
Employees and subcontractors must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must follow all safety instructions and site rules, use protective equipment correctly, report hazards, incidents and near misses, and not interfere with any safety devices or equipment.
Risk Assessment And Safe Systems Of Work
Before starting gardening or maintenance work, suitable and sufficient risk assessments will be undertaken. These assessments will consider hazards such as uneven ground, trip risks, working at height, use of ladders, manual handling, noise, vibration, weather conditions and interaction with the public or clients on site.
Based on these assessments, safe systems of work will be developed and communicated to all relevant staff. These may include designated working areas, exclusion zones when using powered machinery, safe access routes, and methods for handling and storing tools, materials and green waste.
Use Of Tools, Machinery And Vehicles
Gardeners Leyton will ensure that all gardening tools, powered equipment and vehicles used for work are suitable for their purpose, maintained in good condition and inspected regularly. Defective or damaged equipment must be removed from use immediately and reported to a supervisor.
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered tools such as hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, brush cutters, chainsaws and leaf blowers. Operators must follow manufacturer instructions and site specific procedures, including the use of guards, correct starting procedures and safe working distances from other people and property.
Personal Protective Equipment
Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided where necessary, based on the task and the risk assessment. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and face protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, respiratory protection and weather appropriate clothing.
Employees and subcontractors are required to use this equipment correctly, keep it in good condition and report loss or damage. Personal protective equipment is a last line of defence and does not replace the need to eliminate or reduce risks at source.
Manual Handling And Ergonomics
Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling loads such as soil, plants, paving and machinery. To minimise the risk of injury, manual handling will be avoided where reasonably practicable by using trolleys, barrows, lifting aids or mechanical assistance.
Where manual handling cannot be avoided, staff will be trained in safe techniques, including assessment of the load, team lifts where appropriate, and working within their own physical capabilities. Work will be planned to reduce repetitive movements and awkward postures as far as is reasonably possible.
Chemicals, Fertilisers And Green Waste
Any use of horticultural chemicals, fertilisers, soil improvers or treatments will follow product instructions and relevant safety guidelines. Substances will be stored securely when not in use, in labelled containers, and only trained staff may handle or apply them.
Green waste and other materials will be managed to prevent risks from sharp objects, hidden hazards, vermin or biological contamination. Waste will be segregated where appropriate, stored safely prior to removal and disposed of through authorised routes.
Working At Height
Tasks such as pruning, hedge cutting or gutter clearance that involve working at height will be planned and carried out using safe methods. Where ladders are used, they must be suitable for the task, inspected before use and set up on firm, level ground. Alternative equipment such as platforms or extendable tools will be used where this provides a safer method of work.
Staff working at height must maintain three points of contact when using ladders and must not overreach or lean out in a way that could cause loss of balance. Work will be postponed if weather conditions, such as high winds or heavy rain, make working at height unsafe.
Public And Client Safety
Gardeners Leyton recognises its responsibility to protect clients, visitors, neighbours and members of the public in and around the areas where we work. Work areas will be organised to minimise access by non employees through the use of clear visual awareness, safe routing of cables and hoses and appropriate separation between machinery and pedestrian routes.
Noise, dust and other disturbances will be managed so far as reasonably practicable. Tools and materials will not be left unattended in places where they may pose a hazard. Vehicles will be parked considerately and safely, with particular attention to driveways, pavements and shared access routes.
Incident Reporting And Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to a supervisor as soon as possible, regardless of severity. Records will be kept, and where necessary, further investigation and corrective action will be carried out to prevent recurrence.
Emergency arrangements will be in place for first aid, fire, severe weather and other foreseeable events. Staff will be made aware of these arrangements and of the location of first aid supplies and emergency equipment in company vehicles and on sites where work is undertaken.
Training, Consultation And Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Leyton will provide appropriate health and safety training for all employees, including induction training for new starters and refresher training when needed. Additional specific training will be given for the use of machinery, working at height, manual handling and other higher risk tasks.
We encourage open communication about health and safety matters. Employees and subcontractors are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions about safer ways of working. Lessons learned from incidents, near misses and client feedback will be used to improve procedures and working practices.
Monitoring And Review Of This Policy
This Health and Safety Policy will be monitored on an ongoing basis and reviewed periodically to ensure that it remains effective, reflects current operations and continues to comply with relevant health and safety requirements. Changes in work activities, equipment, best practice or legislation will be taken into account when updating the policy and associated procedures.
All staff, subcontractors and others working on behalf of Gardeners Leyton are required to co operate in the implementation of this policy and to make health and safety an integral part of every gardening and grounds maintenance task.
